Miners´celebrations

A unique manifestation of the culture of the miners, who made up the largest population in Banská Štiavnica, are the customs and traditions affecting their daily and festive life. The customs related to the work were conditioned by the awareness of the danger in the mine, but also by the pride of the mining status. In the past, one of the most typical celebrations for miners was “šachtág” (jump through the leather), which was used to admit academics to the mining status. On the holiday of St. Barbora, the patroness of miners, and the feast of the mine patrons, offertories were held. In the morning, the miners in uniform gathered in front of the mine, from where they went to the church in a procession accompanied by music. After the mass, they returned to front of the mine, and there was entertainment. Another miner's holiday was the Miner's Day associated with the Salamander parade.
